The Ombudsman, Maria L\u00facia Amaral, travelled to Luanda, Angola, to participate in the fifth Meeting of the Network of Ombudsmen, National Human Rights Commissions and other National Human Rights Institutions of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries, CPLP Network – Human Rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting, which resulted in the Luanda Declaration, was promoted by the Ombudsman of Angola, Florbela Rocha Ara\u00fajo, who assumed the presidency of the CPLP Network – Human Rights, after the mandate from Cape Verde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fifth meeting of the Network was framed within a cycle of conferences on “The responsibility of CPLP States in case of violation of the Fundamental Rights of Citizens and the Ombudsman’s Degree of Intervention”. The participants visited the installations of the Angolan Ombudsman’s Office, as well as the National Assembly, and were received, in an audience, by its president, Fernando Dias dos Santos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During their stay, which took place between 19 and 25 April, Maria L\u00facia Amaral also went to Huambo for a conference at the Law Faculty of the Jos\u00e9 Eduardo dos Santos University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maria L\u00facia Amaral also participated in a television debate programme on the role of the Ombudsmen, with the participation of the holders of Portugal, Angola, Cape Verde and Mozambique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established on 28 May 2013, in Lisbon, the CPLP Human Rights Network brings together Ombudsmen, National Human Rights Commissions and other Human Rights Institutions from the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries. It currently comprises the Ombudsmen of Portugal, Angola, Mozambique and East Timor, the National Human Rights Commissions of Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique, the Federal Prosecutor for the Rights of the Citizen of Brazil, and, since 2015, the Ombudsman of Cape Verde. The Interministerial Commission on Human Rights of S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 and Pr\u00edncipe is also part of this Network, with observer status. The Portuguese Ombudsman is the Coordinator of the Executive Secretariat of the CPLP Network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
