Ombudsman participates in the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the IOI-International Ombudsman Institute

The Ombudsman, Maria Lúcia Amaral, participated in the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the IOI-International Ombudsman Institute, held from 10 to 12 May, in New York.

As part of the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the IOI and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), with a view to developing and implementing training activities to build the capacity of the Ombudsman’s institutions and to familiarize them with the UN. At the same time, the Memorandum of Understanding will allow the IOI to implement information campaigns so that UN bodies and representatives can better understand the Ombudsman concept and the broad mandate it holds in the various regions of the world.

Maria Lúcia Amaral was elected, in 2020, to the Board of the European Region and, simultaneously, to the IOI’s international Board of Directors.

Established in 1978, the IOI is the only globally oriented organization for ombudsman cooperation. Its membership includes not only the Ombudsmen (institutional members), but also other persons or agencies which, while not holding this capacity, are interested or involved in related activities (associate members). In addition to meetings and initiatives of worldwide scope, there are decentralized activities in six Regions – among which is the Region of Europe, where the Portuguese Ombudsman is located.
